Here in Reno Tahoe, we are proud supporters of food sustainability and local farms, restaurants and distilleries which is why we’ve put together this list of some of the best farm-to-table restaurants and ground-to-glass distilleries in the area.
Sitting in a solid brick building built in the 1940s, Old Granite Street Eatery offers up delicious burgers, sandwiches and more using locally sourced all-beef patties. They also have a market where you can order to go or take home grocery staples like cage-free eggs or oat milk.
With four locations in the area, Great Full Gardens is your go-to place if you have a specialized dietary need or are just looking for great flavor and a unique and tasty menu. Some of their local vendors include Dayton Valley Aquaponics who grow produce in an aquaponic greenhouse facility, Truckee Sourdough Company and Elevated Water.
A hidden gem, South Creek Pizza uses the freshest local and internationally sourced products to bring you the highest quality handmade pizza possible. Their Artisan Neapolitan style dough is imported from Italy and their tomatoes come from just over the hill in California. You won’t want to miss this Hand Crafted – Wood Fired – Brick Oven Pizza.
Mari Chuy’s Mexican Kitchen now has two locations – one in Midtown and another in Victorian Ave. Whatever your plans are in Reno Tahoe, make sure they include a visit to Mary Chuy’s. They source a lot of their ingredients from local farmers, Great Basin Community Food Cop-op and Wolf Pack Meats. Favorite dishes include their Chile Relleno, tacos and of course, margaritas!
Tucked away inside West Street Market, Thali is an organic, vegetarian Indian restaurant that offers a fixed menu sourced from items grown by the hardworking Reno area farmers. When dining in-house, all plates are bottomless meaning you will get to indulge in all the fresh local veggies you want. Plus, try their locally made kombucha or house-made Chai tea.
The Frey family has been farming in Nevada for over 165 years and takes pride in the grains they grow and the whiskey they distill. The Frey Ranch Distillery and farm is located in the Lake Tahoe watershed in Fallon, Nevada, and consider each of their slow grown grains an heirloom grown specifically for the filtered 90 proof Bourbon. The new generation of Frey is more than ranch but a true farm distillery where the whiskey is grown, distilled, matured and bottled on site. You can shop their whiskey at local stores in Reno, or stop by for a tour and tastings every Saturday.
Bently Heritage Estate Distillery is another ground to glass distillery located in Minden, Nevada. Sustainability is a key initiative of theirs. The goal is to safeguard history – some of their buildings are over 100 years old – while creating an experience rooted in place, process and preservation. In January 2020, Bently Heritage campus received LEED Gold Certification. While their public house is currently closed, you can purchase their spirits at a selection of local grocery stores in Reno. While we wait for their whiskey to rest, we recommend the Juniper Grover Gin.
