“Aussie Rules” football, or “footy,” is coming to northern Nevada this weekend when eight teams, including two women’s teams, compete in the United States Australian Football League Western Regional Tournament. The rules for Australian Football were codified in 1858, likely predating most other forms of modern football. Each team consists of 18 players in a fast-action, high-impact, 80-minute match where the scoring opportunities, big hits, and equipment (or lack thereof) most closely resemble Rugby. More than 150 players from across the western U.S. are expected to take part in the all-day tournament at Village Center Park in Cold Springs. For more information, visit
