Dean Voigt Brings Biggest Names in Colt Training

RENO, Nev. (January 21, 2014) — Recent studies suggest that humans and horses alike must adapt mentally and physically to bring themselves more in-tune with one another. When horse and human develop a relationship based on trust and understanding, the possibilities are endless. People who relate to horses have regarded their equine companions as more than just livestock for many centuries. For those who actually build a bond of mutual trust and respect, the relationship between horse and human can be one of the most rewarding.

Gaining the skills to earn the trust of the horse is the subject of a horsemanship clinic coming to the Reno-Sparks Livestock Events Center, April 4-6, 2014. This interactive workshop will teach people how to create the bond needed with their horses to last a lifetime. Become a Horseman, presented by former Pat Parelli instructor and All-Around Champion Cowboy Dean Voigt, “The Lost Art of Starting Colts,” features some of the biggest names in the colt training world.

“If a colt is started correctly -- learning to trust its human companion rather than learning to simply submit -- then you have the foundation for creating a great bond between horse and rider. Breaking colts is becoming a lost art, but it is a skill set that can be learned, and we aim to revive it. We are bringing the best people in the business to Reno to help teach people how to start their colts, and this will be the most interactive workshop you’ve ever attended,” said Voigt.

Voigt has assembled an international team of clinicians. Dan James, an Australian, who co-owns Double Dan Horsemanship in Kentucky; Glenn Stewart from The Horse Ranch in British Columbia; and Jason Patrick from Whispering Willows Ranch in Colorado will be providing hands-on demonstrations and starting colts from multiple breeds during the workshop. This is a 3-day event, beginning on Friday morning starting Mustang colts, and Friday afternoon starting purebred colts. The session will conclude on Sunday with a riding exhibition on the newly started colts, if they are ready to be ridden. Throughout the workshop, the trainers will work with an apprentice and answer questions and talk to attendees.

Three-day ticket prices are $75 for general admission, $150 for reserved seating. There are also a limited number of 3-day VIP tickets that include special events and access to the trainers for $300.
