Snowshoes Over Ski Boots: How I Spend Winter Weekends in Reno Tahoe

Kayla Sisson

Kayla Sisson

Hi! I’m Kayla Sisson - a Reno native, local Realtor, and former coffee shop owner with a deep love for Northern Nevada. I grew up here, built two businesses here, and now I get to help others call Reno Tahoe home.

Growing up in Reno, my parents had a small condo in Tahoe City that we visited almost every weekend - snow or sunshine. The drive up from Reno and those cozy winter stays are some of my favorite childhood memories. My family wasn’t big on skiing, and I remember begging my parents to take us. Every now and then, they’d give in, but most of the time, they’d take my brother and me out into the snow for everything but skiing.

At the time, I didn’t get it - all the “cool” kids were on the slopes. But as I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized my favorite winter moments have nothing to do with lift lines or busy resorts. There’s so much more winter beauty to enjoy right here in Reno Tahoe.

Now, my ideal winter weekend starts with coffee (let’s be honest - that’s every weekend), a quiet day snowshoeing with my husband while chickadees eat seeds right from my hand (literally!), and ends with a cozy dinner and cocktail downtown.

So if you’re looking for a slower kind of winter weekend, one filled with snow, coffee and mountain views - here’s how I like to spend mine around Reno Tahoe.

Morning Coffee & Mountain Views

If I’m heading up to Chickadee Ridge for the day (don’t worry I will tell you all about that next), I always stop at The Lodge Coffee & Wine Bar off Mt. Rose Highway on the way up. It’s right on your route and feels like the start of a perfect winter morning - good coffee, those Sierra Nevada Mountain views, and that crisp air before the snowshoe trail. It gives the perfect mountain cozy cabin vibe to take it all in.

If I’m staying closer to Reno, Perenn Bakery at The Village at Rancharrah is my go-to. They’ve got incredible European-inspired pastries, seasonal lattes and arguably the best croissant in town. Hands down my favorite on the menu - their soft scrambled eggs in a croissant (local tip: add bacon - you won’t regret it!)

Snowshoeing Chickadee Ridge

After coffee, I head up Mt. Rose Highway toward Chickadee Ridge, hands-down one of my favorite winter escapes. If you didn’t pack your own snowshoes, stop at Galena Sports (right before The Lodge Coffee) - they rent gear and the friendly local staff always has all the trail tips. You can also visit BOBOS Ski Board & Patio Reno to rent snowshoes for the day!

You’ll park at the Tahoe Meadows Recreation Area off Hwy 43; there are no parking fees, just pull into the large pullout on the shoulder or grab a roadside spot. From there, it’s about a 2-mile round-trip trek with a gentle climb - perfect for beginners! The trail winds through snow-covered pine trees and opens up to incredible views of Lake Tahoe, and on a sunny or snowy day, that view is always unbeatable. It’s peaceful and totally free of ski-crowd chaos. My husband and I typically like to just hang out for a minute and take it all in. Make it a snowy picnic and pack some snacks to enjoy while soaking up the view.

Local tip: If you bring sunflower seeds, the chickadees will literally land in your hand - it’s one of those simple moments that make you realize just how incredible nature is!

Afternoon Wine & Cozy Lunch Stops

After snowshoeing Chickadee Ridge, you’ve got two directions you can go to reward yourself for a successful morning (and both are incredible options!) - you can head back toward Reno for wine and a cozy meal, or stay near the lake for lunch with a view.

If you decide to stay near the lake a little longer, because you can’t get enough - I am the same way, don’t worry - take the scenic drive around Lakeshore Boulevard to Gar Woods Grill & Pier in Carnelian Bay. This place is truly a staple here in Tahoe. The floor-to-ceiling windows, stone fireplaces, and unobstructed lake views make it one of those places that just feels like Tahoe. Whether you’re sitting by the fire or watching the snow fall outside, it’s the perfect spot to warm up, grab lunch, and, as a local, it’s one of those moments where I always stop and think, this is why we live here. Tip: they’re known around Tahoe for their “Wet Woody” cocktails - a must try even on a cold day!

If you’re heading back into Reno, Zephyr Wine Bar in South Reno is a great stop on the way down. It’s relaxed and welcoming - the kind of spot where you can warm up, share a bottle and a snack while looking at the snowcapped mountain view of Mount Rose. If you’re more of a craft beer fan, right next door is Pinon Bottle South with a huge selection of local craft beers! If you’re in the mood for lunch, The Cheese Board South Reno is located in the same shopping center, a local women-owned spot that offers sandwiches, soups and salads.

Evening in Reno: Cozy, Local, & Laid-Back

Back in Reno, winter evenings are my favorite. I love starting with dinner at Liberty Food & Wine Exchange downtown, they release a winter menu each year and I can personally say I have never had a bad meal here! The best staff (they know us by name!) and I know you didn’t ask - but.. I’d say they make the best espresso martini in town!

If the weather’s nice, bundle up and stroll along the Riverwalk to Wild River Grille; their patio stays open with heaters and twinkle lights that make it feel extra cozy. To end the night, head to Death & Taxes for a craft cocktail (the vibe is dark, moody and perfect for winter!)

More Winter Favorites to Explore

If you have another day in your weekend, wandering the streets of Historic Downtown Truckee is a must! The local shops and small-town charm make it such a fun winter afternoon. Or stay in Reno and check out The Village at Rancharrah, which lights up beautifully in winter and hosts events around the big Christmas tree.

If you’re up for some seasonal fun, go ice skating at Grand Sierra Resort. There are fire pits, Christmas lights, and hot cocoa (or cocktails!) to keep you warm. The rink is open to the public, so you don’t have to be staying at the resort, and the whole setup feels festive!

Where to Stay

For a cozy stay downtown, the Renaissance Reno Downtown Hotel & Spa is my favorite pick - right along the river with a great locally owned spa for a relaxing winter morning or afternoon. If you prefer the classic casino experience, as I know it’s tempting to throw in $20 to see if you hit the jackpot, Grand Sierra Resort offers a fun, resort stay with plenty of great amenities.

Some Final Thoughts

What I love the most about winter here is you can spend the morning in the snow, the afternoon sipping wine, and the evening downtown under the lights. No ski pass, no crowds - just the cozy, local side of Reno Tahoe that’s so easy to fall in love with.
