A Summer Girl's Guide to Reno Tahoe

Lauren Hober

Lauren Hober

Summer girl who loves nothing more than her dog, her friends, and a dip in cold water. Living in Reno the last 18 years, Lauren loves all that Reno has to offer.

Here’s the thing: I love summer. I live for it. Give me 90 degrees, SPF 50 and a cold body of water, and I’m thriving. Add art, sunshine, my dog or a well-balanced espresso martini and, well, I’m in paradise. If you’re anything like me (hot weather girlies, this is your time), then Reno Tahoe is about to become your summer love story — the days are longer, the mountain air is fresh and the desert sunsets leave you in awe every time.

Summer Mornings in Reno

There’s something luxurious about the balance Reno offers. A place where you can wake up early for the farmer’s market, end the night dancing and squeeze in some art in between. So, here’s how to do it right.

Summer mornings are always some of my favorite times. The weather is perfect, the crowds are smaller and you really feel as if the city belongs to you alone. But, before you leave, do not forget the sunscreen and water! You’re in a desert and maybe closer to the sun than you’re used to. Apply generously and reapply often. We are hydrated, protected and unbothered.

A good way to start the day is with Beloved’s Bread. You may wait in line, but you will not regret it. This bakery is a dream — flaky, perfect pastries, delicious coffee drinks and vibes. It’s everything. Go! Then don’t be surprised if you find yourself there again.

If you happen to be in town on a Sunday, you could also start your morning at the Riverside Farmer’s Market. I love supporting local businesses and this is one of the best ways to see just how vendors come together every Sunday (all year long)! Even if you’re just passing through, there’s local honey, coffee, handmade jewelry, art, music, the river, dogs, sunflowers...

Area Lakes

Another option is to get your beach bags packed up and hit one of the lakes nearby. Listen, Tahoe is a star. We all know it, we all love her. As the largest alpine lake in North America and the second deepest, it is hard to outshine her. However, there are other options. Donner Lake is a bit closer and offers a little more serenity. If you get up early enough, they even have free docks for you to snag and enjoy. Another option is Pyramid Lake — a spiritual, cinematic wildly underrated gem. This is not an alpine lake, but you get a full range of desert colors and can learn about the history of the Paiute Tribe. Both lakes are within an hour of Reno and offer a dip in the water to reprieve you from the summer heat.

Things to Do in Reno

Okay, but you don’t want to drive? No worries! Reno offers a ton of fun things to do after you’ve had your morning pastry! This place is absolutely buzzing with creativity. It’s like summer here is one big, open-air art gallery and everything is camera-ready. Here are some of my top recommendations.

  • Mural Tours (MidTown & Downtown): Reno’s art scene lives on its walls. Walk it, bike it, take a guided tour if you’re into history — or just wander with a coffee and your camera. My fave: the floral bouquet mural easiest to spot from the Chrome Coffee Works patio, whose pink, hand-painted building is a sight worth seeing itself.
  • Holland Project: An all-ages art and music venue that hosts over 300 events a year. They do art shows, DIY workshops, concerts and every July they throw their big summer party! It’s the place to dive into Reno’s creative community, so definitely look them up while you’re here!
  • Nevada Museum of Art (NMA): Did you know our state fossil is the Ichthyosaur? No? You will now. Sea Dragons is the current featured exhibition, highlighting the prehistoric icon. You’ll find it in the heart of MidTown with stunning exhibits and rooftop. It’s the perfect stop on any day and a great way to cool off on a summer day.
  • Reno Downtown Library: You may be asking yourself, “Wait, did she just say library?” and the answer is, emphatically, yes. If you’re not a reader, I might not be able to convince you this is the summer you start. However, I can tell you this library offers an interior design that will make you say, “Whoa!” The architect couldn't put the library in a park as he wished, so, the library became as park-like as possible, featuring hundreds of plants, several full-grown trees and a pond with a fountain. I promise it’s worth a pop-in!

Food & Drink in Reno

Okay, and last, but not least, a traveler's favorite things, food and drinks! Here are some of my favorite spots.

  • Rum Sugar Lime (RSL): Here you’ll find my favorite espresso martini in town, but their other drinks are just as exciting. You can also slip into the speakeasy in the back, it’s a whole different, chill mood. Two vibes, one spot. Perfection.
  • DeliTowne: This one might make you think I’m crazy, but there’s a sandwich shop in a gas station. And it’s a sandwich that I deem top of the line. Don’t let the optics deter you. Pro tip: Call in your order ahead of time because it is truly a local favorite.
  • EP Listening Lounge: If there's a DJ, I’m not going home early. My favorite place to dance offers great cocktails, the bartenders are gems, and yes, they have a sweet little record collection you’ll fall in love with.
  • Derby Barber Supply: Hear me out. You don’t need a haircut, but you do need to step inside this beautifully designed space. There’s a tiny bar and café with a completely clear espresso martini (are you noticing a theme?) that I cannot explain — only recommend.
  • Cosmo’s Snack Bar: This pizza spot is *chef’s kiss* and there are no notes. The Spritz is on draft (!!), the crust is perfect and the energy is so right for a post-beach hang (they don’t open until 4 p.m., so plan accordingly).
  • Royce: I would die for this burger. Truly. Especially eaten on the patio on a warm summer night with a Royce Refresher and nowhere to be.
  • Lo-Bar Social: I lied. THIS is my favorite place to dance. If you’re lucky enough to catch the last Friday of the month, you’ll get a chance to experience Soul Night. There’s a rooftop bar aptly named High Bar here as well, which makes this place great for a sunset bevvy.

Reno Tahoe = Summer Vibes

Reno Tahoe during the summer isn’t just a destination — it’s a feeling. It’s waking up early for pastries, sweating in the sun, getting goosebumps from mountain water, dancing after dark and falling in love with local art, one mural at a time.

If you’re looking to chase joy this summer — with a little grit, a lot of sunscreen and just the right amount of cold spritz — this is your sign. Oh, and always say yes to an impromptu dip in the Truckee River. It’s summer. Be spontaneous!
