Upcoming Special Events in Reno Tahoe

Summer in Reno Tahoe continues to heat up as an array of top-shelf events take over the latter portion of the season. Whether visitors are looking for unique, family-friendly experiences like the International Camel and Ostrich Races in Virginia City, sipping a vast selection of beers at the largest canned beer festival in the world, or standing in awe as aircraft zip through the sky at the National Championship Air Races, there is something for everyone in our region as the summer closes. Shakespeare Festival (July 8 – Aug. 27)

Gourmet food and drink meet unparalleled talent on the shores of Lake Tahoe with Sand Harbor State Park’s Summer Shakespeare Festival, boasting the perfect evening activity for the entire family throughout the months of July and August. Two new productions will be gracing the stage this year, as well as a Monday night music showcase and Young Shakespeare Program.

CANFEST (Aug. 26)

CANFEST lives as the world’s original and premier CANNED craft beer festival. For one ticket price, beer lovers can enjoy unlimited samples of over 100 different brews from all around the country (most of which are not distributed in Northern Nevada) during this annual event held at Grand Sierra Resort and Casino.

Lucas Oil Off Road Racing (Aug. 26 – 27)

“A full-contact MMA fight on wheels,” the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series is a nationally televised racing competition at which onlookers can watch drivers fly through the air at high speeds, as well as visit the teams’ pits and learn just how they do it. Here in Reno, the Series takes place at Wild West Motorsports Park; the most challenging course Lucas Oil racers visit.

Burning Man (Aug. 27 – Sept. 4)

Building a temporary, self-sustaining community in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert was no easy feat, but Burning Man’s creators did it and grew its population to today’s estimated 70,000. Each year, these Burners free themselves of the weights of contemporary society, finding solace and civilization in self-expression and experimentalism.

Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-off (Aug. 30 – Sept. 4)

Awarded 2016’s “Best BBQ Festival” by USA Today, the Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-off collects 22 of the best rib recipes from around the world, bringing them to Sparks’ Victorian Square for your enjoyment. Accompanied by music from 12 live musical acts, and a rib eating competition, this festival might just make Labor Day your new favorite holiday.

International Camel and Ostrich Races (September 8 – 10)

Witness an exotic and exciting spectacle as camels, ostriches, and zebras zip across the Virginia City Fairgrounds, guided by their trusty jockeys. This unique event comes around just once a year, and it’s sure to thrill a crowd of all ages. As this is a true Northern Nevada staple, tickets can go quickly, so customers are encouraged to purchase them in advance.

The Great Reno Balloon Race (Sept. 8 – 10)

The largest free hot-air ballooning event in the world, The Great Reno Balloon Race is an internationally famous spectacle drawing hot-air balloonists and enthusiasts from all around the world. For 35 years, locals and tourists alike have looked to the Reno skies for three days in September to take in spectacular views of unique hot-air balloons as they make their ascent.

National Championship Air Races (Sept. 13 – 17)

National Championship Air Races is a local staple combining exciting entertainment with the fastest – and highest flying – sport in the world. Join flight and aircraft enthusiasts from all around the country and witness six racing classes – and a broad array of both civil and military aircraft demonstrations.

Street Vibrations (Sept. 27 – Oct. 1)

Street Vibrations is one of Reno’s largest and loudest events. Replete with tours, live entertainment, stunt shows and a marquee motorbike ride to Lake Tahoe, Street Vibrations is not to be missed. Anyone is welcome to join in on the festivities, but VIPs can enjoy special parking, official t-shirts, exclusive parties and so much more.
