Good eats, historic towns, epic lake days and all the coffee you could hope for. That’s exactly how it went for travel bloggers Away Lands and Cheat Day Eats, otherwise known as Amy and Jessica.

These two ladies capitalized on each other’s strengths to explore the best of what Reno Tahoe has to offer. Whether that was chowing down on a Poke bowl at Food Truck Friday or climbing on the world’s “Tallest Artificial Climbing Wall” at Whitney Peak, these ladies never held back and did it all in Reno Tahoe.

CLIMB TO THE TOP OF THE TOP

Want a bird’s eye view of the city? We’ve got you covered. Whitney Peak Hotel boasts an outdoor climbing wall reaching 164 feet over downtown Reno and the famous Reno Arch. The climbing wall has been recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the “Tallest Artificial Climbing Wall” and is a must-do for those looking for a unique experience in Reno Tahoe. The hotel offers other climbing options, including classes, indoor walls and bouldering. When you’re ready to head out for a rock climbing adventure, there are plenty of popular climbing areas within a short drive of Reno.

LAKE DAZE

Now that you’ve worked up a sweat, cool off in the pristine waters of Lake Tahoe. As the largest alpine lake in North America with 72 miles of shoreline, there are plenty of places to relax on a sandy beach, cannonball off a boulder or paddle out onto the crystal clear water.

The lake’s deep blue water is framed by pine trees and the majestic Sierra Nevada mountains, meaning that no matter where you find yourself spreading out your towel, whether at Chimney Beach, Sand Harbor or another beach, the view will be second to none.

FRESH FOOD, FRESH AIR

Summertime means dining al fresco in Reno Tahoe, and Food Truck Fridays at Idlewild Park is an event that can’t be missed. Come hungry because the weekly event usually draws around 35 food trucks, including those from favorite local restaurants such as Liberty Food and Wine Exchange. Trucks are serving everything from Korean BBQ and poke bowls, to pizza and Mexican street tacos. Oh, and did we mention dessert? Yeah, you better save room for that. Gelato, frozen dipped fruit, crepes and shaved ice are just a few of the options to choose from.

THERE'S SILVER IN THEM HILLS

If you love the sound of cowboy boots on a wooden sidewalk and the jingle of spurs, then make sure you add Virginia City to your travel list. A short drive from Reno, this historic mining town is rich with history and character (as well as a few characters). Find the perfect backdrop for a Wild West photo shoot, take a tour of an old silver mine or hunt for ghosts at one of the many haunted buildings. This quaint town is the ideal day trip, no matter if you’re a history buff or just looking for a fun afternoon. If you’re lucky enough to be in town for one of their truly unique events, you might just catch a camel race or Rocky Mountain oyster festival!

A Step Back in Time

If you like gooey cheese and cold beer, then you’re going to love Great Basin Brewing Company. With two locations in Sparks and Reno, this local brewery is the oldest in the state of Nevada. When you go, make sure to order the famous Ichthyosaur “Icky” IPA, named after the fossil specimens found in central Nevada of a reptile that went extinct more than 200 million years ago. They also have rotating seasonal beers and a menu that will have you struggling to decide what to order. (We like the beer cheese soup and the nachos, but you can’t really go wrong.)
