At a depth of 1,645 feet, Lake Tahoe is the second deepest lake in North America. And with such great depth comes great, big fish! Depending on which season you charter your fishing trip, Lake Trout (Mackinaw), Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout and Kokanee Salmon are commonly found in the lake, with an average size of about 2 to 7 pounds. If you’re lucky, you may join the ranks of fishermen who have taken home 20 to 30-pound trout from the lake – it happens a few times each year!

More Fishing in the Lake Tahoe Area
Lake Tahoe isn’t the only lake in the area where you can fish. Donner Lake, as well as Boca and Stampede Reservoirs, are also popular lakes for fishing.
Donner Lake’s beautiful scenery makes it an ideal setting for leisurely casting a line while you take in the tree-lined shore and mountain views. Remember to adjust your methods when fishing here - Donner Lake can be a bit breezier in the late afternoons, but large Mackinaw trout have been pulled from her depths.
This lake is also frequently stocked, so you’ll have a higher chance of taking home a fish you’re proud of. If you don’t have a boat, take advantage of the many piers that line the shore!
Boca and Stampede Reservoirs are also great places to visit. Since both lakes are frequently stocked, shore fishing will be productive whether you go out early in the morning or late in the evening with live bait, lures or flies. Since they are so close together, you can easily hit them both on the same day.
