No matter what Burning Man look you decide, here are some essentials you’ll want to add to your costume:

–          Lights: A flashlight is helpful, but you need more than that to be seen at night. Wear glow sticks, flashing lights, EL wire, head lamps…  Anything and everything glowing!

–          Goggles: Essential for keeping the dust and dirt out of your eyes!

–          Shoes: Going bare-foot may seem like a good idea… I mean, you’re channeling your inner nature, focusing on self-expression, right? Unfortunately, going without shoes results in what is known as “Playa Foot”- a painful drying, cracking rash caused by prolonged contact with the alkali lake bed. Burning Man suggests bringing rubber Birkenstock clogs or boots that won’t get trashed by the alkali.

–          A broad brimmed hat with a cord: You’ll no doubt need a head covering… and having a hat with a cord will keep it on your head during gusts of wind.

*Also, don’t forget to leave out those decorations and costume items behind, keeping in mind the Leave No Trace mantra.. Feathered beaus may seem like a cool idea, but when you’re spending all your time picking up all the feathers you shed, you may want to reconsider.

Happy Burn!
