Compression! Art & Fire
Downtown Reno (ReTrac Plaza) July 29, 2017
3:00 PM - 10:00 PM
The allure of Fire to humankind is irresistible!
It's the "hottest" show during the popular Artown festival and an opportunity to celebrate contemporary and emergent art. Large-scale propane flame effects are erected around a performance state featuring music and dance. FREE to the public!
During the daylight hours . . .
Informal hands-on object manipulation workshops to allow attendees to try the skills needed to perform with various fir tool props and hula hoops.
Event participants and spectators are encouraged to costume in the style of Burning Man and can participate in a "burner" fashion show.
A Trash to Treasures art contest is open to the public; take a piece of trash and turn it into art. The winner will be decided by a vote from spectators.
Art Cars that have been mutated and enhanced artistically and functionally will line the street and can be explored while on display. All art cars with sound are linked for simultaneous broadcast of music to enhance the musical experience and spectators can literally dance in the streets.
See works of art that incorporate or have been produced by fire (glass-blowing, blacksmithing, welding, propane sculpture, etc.) in the “Fire Garden.” Artists whose works are wrought by fire share varied spotlights so that attendees can understand the breadth fire plays in art and expression.
Shop Vendor Village.
At night . . . .
Fire dancing and synchronized flame effects light up the downtown corridor while fire sculptures provide ambient display. Computer-controlled and music-synchronized flame effects line the music and dance performance stage. Fire is incorporated into choreographed dance, sculptures and effects to create surprise, variety, beauty and excitement.
Art Cars, illuminated in every imaginable manner, light up the streets.
Art sculptures (many of which can be interactively controlled by festival attendees) start to breathe fire, shoot flame and captivate viewers with stationary fire scenes as diverse as the participating sculptors.
