Knitting Factory RenoGirlfriend getaways are popular among wanderlust women, but that doesn’t mean that men aren’t still breaking away for their share of golf weekends and fishing trips. Couples, friends and families needn’t decide between two destinations, as Reno offers up a medley of activities for both men and women.

Every woman knows that it’s not a true vacation without at least one visit to the spa. A plethora of posh sanctuaries like new 30,000-square-foot Spa Atlantis are ready and waiting to treat flocks of females to skin glowing body wraps and mind-numbing massages. The Pantai Luar treatment is available in only 8 spas in the entire country, and Spa Atlantis happens to be one of those. The Peppermill even has a Girlfriend Getaway package tailor-made for girls-only getaways with one night in a Tuscany suite, pedicures, facials and champagne for as little as $299 per night. And men needn’t be left out of the pampering. Every spa offers a variety of treatments designed with even the most rugged man in mind.

While women are indulging themselves in the sauna, men can hit the lakes and rivers for some of the finest fishing in the west. Nevada waters have no closed season and according to the Reno Fly Shop, the region offers some of the most overlooked fishing opportunities anywhere. Mountain lakes and streams are as abundant as roulette tables. The high desert lakes and rivers are home to some of the worlds’ largest cutthroat trout. Popular spots include Pyramid Lake, Truckee River and Stampede Reservoir, not to mention nearby Lake Tahoe.

Both parties can partake in adventure down the Truckee River through the heart of Downtown Reno on a whitewater raft or a single kayak. Professional tours are offered along the shores of the Truckee, with breathtaking views of the city and landscape. Be sure to keep valued articles secure or else lose them to the river!

Men can more than satisfy their consumer urges for outdoor gear at the new Scheels Sporting Goods or Cabela’s, while women can update their wardrobes at the boutiques of California Avenue. Nicknamed “Cal Ave,” the street is home to an array of locally-owned boutiques and offers some of the most unique shopping in Reno. Kalifornia Jean Bar, Clay Nichols and Shoe will have shoppers second-guessing their zip code. The shops of the nearby Truckee River Arts District are equally as stylish and interspersed with trendy cafes and coffee shops. And if the trip is timed just right, the guys and gals can spend an afternoon touring the Riverwalk District during a monthly wine or beer walk. A drink in hand is highly encouraged.

Not far from shopping central is the home of Reno’s newest attraction, Aces Ballpark, home of the Triple-A Reno Aces. The team kicked off their inaugural season in April and has ignited an enthusiastic fan base and new spirit of sportsmanship among Reno residents and visitors alike. Adjacent to the ballpark is the new Freight District, an entertainment area with new restaurants and pubs that comes to life at night with live music. Doors close when the party ends.

Couples and friends can reconvene in the evening when hip bars and distinctive dining options set the revitalized downtown area in motion. From sports bars and college-reminiscent pubs to swanky wine bars and upscale eateries, Reno has raised the bar on its evening offerings. The Chocolate Bar on South Arlington oozes sophistication and tantalizes guests with small plates (Kobe sliders and truffled chips), decadent desserts (chocolate fondue), an impressive selection of scrumptious cookies and truffles and extensive cocktail menu chock full of decadent libations.

For more filling meals, there’s Louis’ Basque Corner on 4th Street where men, women and their respective urban tribes can bond over family-style dinners. The eatery showcases Reno’s rich Basque heritage with mouthwatering lamb stew, oxtails and sweetbreads and keeps things lively with a potent Picon Punch. This traditional Basque cocktail literally packs a punch. The ingredients include Amer Picon (a bitter orange spirit), grenadine, soda water, and brandy, topped with lemon peel.

The Beaujolias Bistro brings a bit of French flare to the downtown area. Located a half-block from the Truckee River, the cozy eatery is nestled in a building nearly a century old with a dining room constructed with rustic brick walls. The Wild River Grille on South Virginia offers up classic American dishes and Blue Moon Gourmet Pizza on California serves up the finest gourmet pizza in the High Sierra. Sushi and sake lovers can choose from nearly a dozen restaurants, including Sushi Pier (One and Two), Sushi Club, Aloha, Hiroba, Woo Chon and Sushi Lovers.

The West Street Market bustles with dining opportunity. Visitors can hit the new West Street Wine Bar, Niko’s Greek Kitchen or the Se7en Tea House and Bar, which features a vast variety of teas and coffees as well as a cocktail lounge with top shelf spirits and a complete wine list.

The nightlife stays lively well after sundown as watering holes like Strega beckon pub crawlers with an authentic homey atmosphere. The truly unique bar opened its doors last year after finding a home in a 1912 bungalow-style house, complete with porch, living room and rec (pool) room. Guests should be sure to partake in one of the refreshing agua fresca drinks, made with fresh juices from an old-school juicer.

St. James Infirmary aptly classifies itself as a ‘juke joint’ and sets itself apart with spectacular views from a rooftop patio. The California Avenue bar is stylish yet comfortable and the perfect place to step back from the rat race and “chillax.” Owners claim the juke box sets the joint apart, with hand-selected albums rotated on a regular basis.

The Divine Ultra-Lounge is a scene for the fashionable and festive. Dramatic lighting and modern design set the tone while VIP booths and bottle service bring more than a touch of sophistication. Live entertainment and music ensures unforgettable evenings.

From a relaxing respite at a luxury spa to a kicked back day experiencing some of the best fishing holes in the west, Reno is the perfect escape for anyone who needs a great getaway.
