Spring Skyline Reno

Spring Travel Guide – How to Pack for Your Trip to Reno Tahoe

Spring is here and the weather in Reno Tahoe is nothing short of delightful! With sunny skies and snow-capped mountains, this is the perfect time to plan your trip to the region, whether it be for an outdoor or urban adventure. “What should I pack?” is a common question for travelers, and the varying spring weather in Reno can make packing your suitcase a challenge. This guide to area activities and climate considerations will help you enjoy your time in the Biggest Little City.

Climate and Elevation

Reno’s high desert climate means plenty of sunshine during the day, but those same clear skies can mean chilly mornings and evenings. Downtown Reno is at 4,500 ft elevation, and the short drive to Tahoe takes you 2,000 ft higher so the weather in Reno can vary from what you will find at the lake. Sunshine and mild temperatures, combined with the high elevation, can leave some people prone to sunburn so remember to apply SPF, even on days with cooler temperatures.

What to Pack

Dressing in layers is essential during the spring months in Reno Tahoe. Mornings and evenings are still cool, while afternoon sunshine can bring warmer temperatures. Be sure to pack comfortable shoes and breathable clothing so you’re prepared for changing temps and outdoor fun, whether it be wandering through MidTown Reno or exploring the trails around Lake Tahoe.

Spring Packing Essentials:

  • Lip balm with SPF
  • Sunscreen
  • Moisturizer
  • Hat & sunglasses
  • Windbreaker and/or sweater
  • Lightweight, breathable layers
  • Extra socks (there’s nothing worse than cold, wet feet!)
  • Comfortable, water-resistant walking/hiking shoes
  • Camera

If you plan to spend most of your time in Tahoe, make sure to pack some warmer clothing options. Add a jacket, warmer pieces of clothing and snow-friendly shoes to your bag, but think about throwing in a T-shirt, shorts or yoga pants just in case you’re here during one of the sunny and warm spring days, or if you plan on spending some time in Reno. If you want to enjoy some spring skiing along the way then don’t forget your gear since the mountains will still be frosted with snow!
