Reno’s Eco-Friendly Hotels

As Reno works to be the next “green” city of the West, local resorts are moving toward more eco-friendly hotel operations. In their efforts to reduce environmental impacts, Atlantis Casino Resort Spa, Eldorado Resorts’ Reno properties, Grand Sierra Resort and Peppermill Resort Spa Casino are among the first to adopt eco-friendly hotel initiatives on their properties.

Atlantis Casino Resort Spa has taken many steps toward making green hotel initiatives a possibility. The Green Building Initiative (GBI), awarded the property with the Four Green Globes certification for its energy-efficient measures such as light sensors, energy management systems, and variable speed drives to capture measurable energy savings. Atlantis has also installed new water stations from Vivreau Advanced Water Systems. The water comes in both still and sparking and is free to all guests on the casino floor. This initiative will directly eliminate over 1 million single-use plastic water bottles per year. Other eco-friendly initiatives include EPA-approved mattresses, low energy light bulbs, water-efficient showerheads, biodegradable laundry detergents and soaps, and energy-efficient dishwashers.

Eldorado Resort Casino, Circus Circus Hotel Casino and Silver Legacy Resort Casino, have also been certified by the Green Building Initiative for their environmentally friendly hotel practices. Silver Legacy and Circus Circus were awarded the Four Green Globes certification and Eldorado was awarded with three Globes. Their highest-rated areas when assessed by the GBI for low-emissions boilers and water heaters, having a written environmental policy, goals and targets for energy, water and hazardous materials, low-flow faucets and high-efficiency lighting. In addition, these Reno lodging options have implemented eco-friendly initiatives such as a towel and linen reuse program and single-stream recycling.

Grand Sierra Resort has worked to reduce their environmental impact by taking steps to increase energy efficiency, reduce waste and boost water conservation. Their eco-friendly hotel initiative, named GSR Cares, has helped them to achieve TripAdvisor Green Leader status. This commitment to sustainable practices has even extended to include eco-friendly products, electric car charging stations and environmentally friendly laundry procedures.

Peppermill Resort Spa Casino has been recognized by the Geothermal Energy Association as the only resort in the United States to use geothermal energy to power their facilities and produce heat for guests. To accomplish this, Peppermill had to drill a well tapping into the geothermal aqua filter allowing it to capture and convert water through a loop system into energy. The well created for this energy source reaches depths of over 4,400 feet, which is the deepest geothermal well in the city of Reno. For this, they have received a Special Recognition Award as part of the Baseload Renewable Energy Summit. This energy source heats 100% of the resort’s water and mechanical heat of the 2.1 million square foot facility. Their other environmentally friendly initiatives include a composting program for food scraps, a paperless Human Resources Department and a recycling program for soaps and other bottled amenities from hotel rooms.

Other smaller Reno properties are also stepping up to implement more eco-friendly processes. Residence Inn by Marriott is Energy Star certified and has a program dedicated to towel and linen reuse and the Staybridge Suites have incorporated sustainability best practices into every room through their corporate IHG Green Engage system.
