Rather than radical breaks with history, musical creativity builds upon the past. New ideas do not trample tradition so much as transform it. Heard as one of music’s great classicists (in comparison to contemporaries like Wagner) Brahms did not imitate his predecessors, but imagined new soundscapes appearing from the shadows of Beethoven, such as his one-and-only violin concerto written for his friend and superstar, Joseph Joachim. After extending Romanticism to its breaking point with the adventurous harmonies in his tone poems Salome and Elektra, Richard Strauss turned to opera and to more traditional harmony with Der Rosenkavalier [The Knight of the Rose, 1911], which contains some of his most sublime music. Chinese American composer Zhou Tian offers a colorful 21st century take on the tone poem with his Palace of Nine Perfections, based on 17th century scroll paintings by Yuan Jiang.

"An exciting, boundary-defying performer - Pine displays a power and confidence that puts her in the top echelon." The Washington Post
