A near-record number of pilots participated in the National
Championship Air Races Pylon Racing Seminar (PRS), also known as
"Rookie School", 18-21 June at the Reno Stead Airfield. Now in its
eleventh year, PRS allows pilots to safely improve air racing
techniques in an educational environment.
Aircraft participating included Unlimited Class fan favorites "Dago
Red" and "Strega", as well as representatives of the Sport, Biplane,
Formula One, T-6, and Jet classes.
Pilots who have not raced recently at the Reno Air Races are
required to attend in order to qualify for the main event in September.
"The increase in attendance at PRS is an indication of the
dedication of our race pilots to safe, fast-paced, high-quality air
racing”, said Reno Air Racing Association President and CEO, Mike
Houghton. "There is a lot of energy heading into rookie school and that
will only bode well for the excitement we will all experience in
September."
"PRS gives both pilots and race officials an opportunity to test
ability levels and safety procedures in a noncompetitive, low-pressure
situation,” Houghton said. "It is part of our year-round effort to
ensure that the Reno Air Races are as safe as possible."
To qualify to race, pilots must participate in classroom-based
briefing sessions and then successfully complete a series of test
flights under the supervision of veteran race pilot instructors.
