"It's Hammer Time" with MC Hammer

Silver Legacy Resort Casino
June 30, 2012

8:00 PM - 11:00 PM

M.C. Hammer, the immensely popular rap artist, actor and entrepreneur, synthesized the street sounds of black cultural in the 80’s and 90’s. “Let’s Get It Started” on Saturday, June 30 at 8 p.m. in Silver Legacy’s Grande Exposition Hall.

Hammer, best known for hits like “U Can’t Touch This,” flamboyant dance moves and trademark Hammer pants, attained superstar-status that made him a household name and pop icon. Named after his likeness to baseball's big hitter, Henry 'Hammerin' Hank' Aaron, he made his first forays into music financed by baseball players Mike Davis and Dwayne Murphy, allowing him to form Bustin' Records and release the solo single, "Ring 'Em.'

MC Hammer has previously been part of the religious rap group the Holy Ghost Boys, and cut a 1987 debut set “Feel My Power.” A minor hit, it did enough to bring MC Hammer to the attention of Capitol Records. After contracts were completed, the album was reissued under the title “Let’s Get It Started.” Following this success, in 1990, was “Please Hammer, Don’t Hurt ‘Em,” spending twenty-one weeks at #1, resulting in a Diamond certification and near constant rotation on pop channel MTV and dance routines that were the equal of Michael Jackson. The follow-up, "Too Legit To Quit," was released under the name “Hammer.” The sleeve notes to the album expanded on his desire for black youth to rid themselves of drugs and resurrect their Christian morality through self-education.

By 1994, there was a huge image switch, from harem pants and leather cat suits to dark glasses and a goatee beard. The resultant album pulled in producers G-Bomb from Grand Jury Records, the Hines brothers from Detroit, Teddy Riley and members of the Dogg Pound, and specifically went after the Oakland G-funk of artists such as Too $hort. Hammer returned with "The Funky Headhunter."

There is nobody quite like MC Hammer and he is right here at the Grande Exposition Hall on Saturday, June 30 at 8 p.m. Tickets are available for $45 with premium seating for $59.50.
