A Great Deal Then and Now The city of Sparks in the Truckee Meadows of northern Nevada has quite an intriguing history. The town came into existence in the early 1900s by order of the Southern Pacific Railway Company to serve as a big switching yard. The company made a generous offer to its employees on the old yard in Wadsworth: land would be laid next to the new roundhouse, and the railroad would give everyone deed to a lot. Further to the offer, the company was willing to pack up and ship every house in Wadsworth to the new town, free of charge. On the day the lots were drawn for, sixty-seven lots were sold at a price of $1 per lot. And just like that, Sparks was born. Today, the city has come a great distance from its unassuming railroad roots. It has gained a distinguishing name as a leading special event venue, with annual attractions in downtown’s Victorian Square that draw hundreds of thousands of visitors. The Hometown Farmers Market, Star Spangled Sparks, Nugget’s Best in the West Rib Cook-off, Hot August Nights and Hometown Christmas events are eagerly anticipated and exceedingly well-attended every year. Sparks also has a very well-designed parks and recreation system that includes numerous neighborhood parks, a range of regional sports facilities and an abundant selection of enjoyable recreational programs for children and adults alike. The Sparks Marina Park is a notable example. The nicely-sized lake is just a few miles from downtown and offers superb swimming, boating, fishing, scuba diving and picnicking. Mountain views abound from the Marina and the city of Sparks itself, which shares the picturesque Truckee Meadows with its sister city, Reno. Legends at Sparks Marina is Northern Nevada’s newest Outlet Shopping Destination. An outlet center filled with a wide selection of your favorite brands offering 65% off everyday retail prices, Kenneth Cole, Gymboree, Forever 21, Lane Bryant, Michael Kors, Jones New York, Nike, multiple unique themed restaurants and home to the the World’s largest All Sports Store-Scheels. Legends features exquisite landscaping, fountains and fireplaces along with unique artistic sculptures representing famous Nevada Legends. The center is anchored by the 245,000-square-foot Scheels All Sports store. Besides shopping there are great family destinations as well. An example, Wild Island includes a water park, go-karts, mini-golf, bowling, birthday parties and even an adult lounge. If golf is more your game, Sparks has several courses to its name, and has over 50 more courses within an hours drive. Not to be outdone by other local cities, Sparks, offers great dining opportunities, whether in one of the casino/resorts, grills or restaurants. Come sample all that Sparks has to offer!
